The Christmas Market in Liverpool is an event that every year fills the city with a special, light-filled, and joyful atmosphere. In the streets of one of England’s most iconic port cities, colorful stalls, sparkling decorations, and scents that instantly evoke the festive season appear.
The Christmas Market in Liverpool is certainly not a destination in itself. Liverpool is, above all, a city of maritime history and a global music capital (the city that gave the world The Beatles). However, if you are here between late November and the end of December, it’s worth knowing about the ongoing market.

CHRISTMAS MARKET IN LIVERPOOL – HISTORY
The history of the Christmas Market in Liverpool is relatively recent compared to the traditions of many European cities, yet it has already become an integral part of the city’s festive character. The beginnings of the modern market date back to the early 21st century, when Liverpool started organizing seasonal fairs near the city center to provide locals and tourists with a place full of festive atmosphere, music, and local flavors. Over time, the market grew in scale, with more stalls, attractions, and Christmas decorations appearing. A key moment was the relocation of the event to the area around St George’s Hall, one of the most iconic and historic landmarks in the city. The monumental setting of this neoclassical building has thus become the perfect backdrop for the market.
MAIN PART OF THE MARKET AT ST GEORGE’S HALL
The main and most important market is located next to the historic St George’s Hall, with the stalls arranged in a “U” shape around the building. Here you’ll find a huge Ferris wheel, a charming vintage-style carousel, an exciting tubing slide, and a colorful Santa Land area. Behind the building is the main food zone, while most of the attractions at the front are aimed at children.
WHAT TO EAT AT THE MARKET?
At the Liverpool market, you’ll primarily find classic street food options that are perfect for the winter season. Popular choices include burgers, hot dogs, baked sandwiches, sausages, and warming fries with various toppings. Many stalls also serve aromatic dishes inspired by world cuisines, such as pierogi, churros, and Asian dishes.
MULLED WINE AND OTHER DRINKS
It’s hard to imagine a market without the aroma of mulled wine. For those looking for a cozy spot for a hot drink, the Liverpool Christmas Market offers numerous bars to suit every taste. You can choose traditional hot cider, mulled wine, beer, hot chocolate, or coffee. You can relax by the fire at the Tipi Bar, enjoy the views from the Windmill Bar, soak up the festive atmosphere at the Alpine Bar, or have fun at the Bavarian Bar. There are also smaller bars in barrels and wooden huts scattered throughout the market.
Unfortunately, the tradition of using collectible ceramic market mugs hasn’t reached England. Drinks are served in disposable cups, which is a shame, as our collection didn’t grow.
GLASS, CERAMICS, TEXTILES, AND OTHER HANDICRAFTS
The market also features plenty of artisan stalls where artists showcase jewelry, decorations, wooden items, and ceramics. Each piece has its own character, often crafted in small family workshops and sometimes available only during the market. Among the handicraft and gift stalls, you’ll also find unique presents such as Christmas ornaments, handmade leather notebooks, woolen goods, original artworks, hand-painted decorations, festive beverages, delicious cheeses, and many other special products.
“PLUSH” MARKET
What catches our attention is probably the largest number of stalls selling plush toys in the world. There are huge ones, large, small, and even ones you can win in a draw. There are really many of them, and it’s hard to pass by without noticing. The only thing stopping us from participating in the draws is the fact that we flew here and would have to figure out how to take them home.
SECOND MARKET IN THE LIVERPOOL ONE GARDEN
The second, much smaller market is located on the rooftop, and its position at the end of the Liverpool One shopping district adds to its charm. Here you’ll also find a large Christmas tree, plenty of interesting food stalls and tents, and a few attractions for children.
THIRD MARKET AT ROYAL ALBERT DOCK
Along the waterfront, in the old docks, the festive atmosphere is also strong, and the entire area gains a unique charm thanks to maritime-themed lighting. Ships, warehouses, and historic structures sparkle with lights inspired by nautical motifs, beautifully highlighting the character of the place. Be sure to visit this area during the Christmas season, as the combination of history, water, and festive illuminations creates a truly remarkable experience.
FOURTH MARKET AT EXCHANGE FLAGS SQUARE
The final, small market can be found on the square behind the town hall, where a dozen or so tents offer food, drinks, and gifts.
CHRISTMAS ATMOSPHERE IN THE CITY STREETS
Of course, the festive atmosphere and illuminations can be found not only at the markets but throughout the entire city. The largest and most impressive decorations are at the Liverpool One shopping center.
CHRISTMAS MARKET IN LIVERPOOL – SUMMARY
The Christmas Market in Liverpool was recognized as one of the best in the United Kingdom by Which magazine, receiving high ratings in several categories: shopping, food and drink, cultural attractions, and accommodation.
Despite these accolades, the question arises: does this market truly leave a lasting impression?
The Liverpool market is not typical, which official city websites list as one of its strengths. You won’t find choirs, traditional artisan products, or classic Christmas dishes here. Instead, the area is filled with 1980s pop music. For us, this was a major downside, as the market has little to do with the traditional Christmas atmosphere and feels more like a fairground or amusement park.
