DOLINA MUMINKÓW (MOOMINWORLD) W NAANTALI

MOOMINWORLD IN NAANTALI

Moominworld in Naantali is a place where childhood returns and imagination takes shape. Located on a picturesque island off the coast of the Finnish town of Naantali, the theme park transports visitors to the fairy-tale world created by Tove Jansson

Moominvalley in Naantali is located among fragrant forests and peaceful bays. Among the wooden houses, you can meet the Moomins themselves, look inside their characteristic blue house and feel like a character in Tove Jansson’s cult story. It is not only an attraction for children. Moomin Valley Park attracts entire families, literature lovers and travellers looking for unusual places in Finland. We came back from there delighted.

However, Moomin Valley is not the only reason to visit Naantali in Finland. This small coastal town in south-western Finland delights with its peaceful, holiday atmosphere.

MOOMINVALLEY – ISLAND GUIDE

PIER LEADING TO THE ISLAND

The pier leading to Kailo Island, where Moomin Valley (Moominworld) is located, is one of the most recognisable places in Naantali. It connects the old town with the island, allowing you to walk to the theme park while admiring the view of the Naantali marina and the archipelago along the way.

ENTRANCE TO MOOMINWORLD

THE BIG STAGE

Just beyond the park entrance is a huge building with a stage where performances featuring the Moomins and their friends take place every day. The programme changes depending on the season, so even regular visitors will always find something new here.

FOOD COURT

The food court in Moomin Valley is a place where you can relax and try local delicacies after a day full of attractions. There are several restaurants, cafés and snack stands offering both lunch dishes and quick snacks. The menu is dominated by dishes inspired by Finnish cuisine, as well as options for children, including pancakes, soups and homemade pastries. During the summer season, ice cream, Moomin-shaped waffles and freshly baked cinnamon rolls are particularly popular.

SOUVENIR SHOPS

The souvenir shops in the park are a real paradise for fans of Tove Jansson’s work. They are located in several places in the park, making it easy to find something to remember your visit by. The range includes Moomin soft toys, figurines, mugs, T-shirts, magnets and limited editions available exclusively at Moominworld. Buying a souvenir is a great way to take a little bit of Moominvalley home with you.

Please note! Some of these products can also be purchased at authorised shops in Finland and at Helsinki Airport, but the prices there are slightly higher.

MOOMIN HOUSE

Moomin House is the most recognisable landmark in Moomin Valley and the heart of the entire park. This distinctive blue multi-storey building has been recreated according to descriptions in Tove Jansson’s books.

You can, of course, go inside and see all the rooms. There is a kitchen with a tiled stove, a living room with a fireplace, a library, the characters’ bedrooms, and even an attic full of interesting items, as well as Moominmamma’s pantry. Every detail has been carefully reproduced to capture the atmosphere of the literary Moomin Valley.

SMALL STAGE

Right next to the cottage, on a small stage, characters act out mini scenes from the books.

CHARACTERS FROM THE MOOMIN VALLEY

The characters from the Moomin Valley are the main attraction of Moominworld and the reason why children and adults visit this park in Naantali. On the paths, in the gardens and by the houses, you can meet Moomin, Moominmamma, Moominpappa, Little My, Snufkin, Snorkmaiden, Snufkin, Paszczak and many other characters created by Tove Jansson. The characters move around the entire area, greet guests, pose for photos and take part in games and performances. Each of them faithfully reflects their literary character: Snufkin is mysterious and pensive, Little My is energetic and playful, and Moominmamma is warm and hospitable.

THE PATH OF ABSENCE, OR RELAXATION

The Path of Absence, also known as the Path of Relaxation, is a quiet and charming place in Moomin Valley, designed for peaceful walks away from the hustle and bustle of the main attractions. The route leads through the forest south of the main road crossing the park and starts at the food court. Along the way, you will find benches, hammocks and other places to rest. There is also a telescope by the bay, reminiscent of the book ‘Comet in Moominvalley’.

WANDERER’S TENT

Along the way, we can visit Wanderer and his small camp.

FREDRIKSON’S WORKSHOP AND INVENTION PARK

This is an interactive area in Moominvalley that will particularly appeal to children who are curious about the world. The workshop is inspired by Fredrikson, an inventive inventor from Tove Jansson’s books. Inside, you can see his unusual constructions, ship models, tools and machines, and try your hand at simple experiments. Right next door is the Invention Park, full of devices and installations that encourage play and learning through experience.

BATHING HUT

And so we reach the west coast of the island, where another surprise awaits us, a place that seems to have been taken straight from a book illustration and brought to life. The Bathing Hut is a small wooden house standing on a small pier, with steps leading directly into the water and a cosy interior. In the literary Moomin Valley, it was Moominpappa’s favourite place, where he spent his time resting and talking. Right next to the pier, by the Bathing Hut, the Sea Monster emerges from the water, a character known from Tove Jansson’s books, who is not dangerous at all. In the literary Moomin Valley, he was rather a quiet and somewhat mysterious observer of events, sometimes commanding respect with his appearance.

SNARKL’S HOUSE

Snarkl’s House is another iconic attraction in Moomin Valley. This small, somewhat eccentric house belongs to Snarkl, a mysterious, solitary character who loves to collect strange objects and inventions. The interior of the house is filled with books, chests, maps and various artefacts, and every detail reflects the character of the owner, who is eccentric, curious about the world and somewhat melancholic.

FILIFIONKA’S HOUSE

Filifionka’s house is a charming little cottage opposite the Moomins’ house, belonging to one of the most distinctive characters. Her cottage reflects the pedantic and orderly nature of the character. Inside, you can see her meticulously decorated interiors, full of order and small decorations. Filifionka is known for her love of cleanliness and routine. Therefore, laundry hangs on the terrace, and there is a whole bathhouse and laundry room here.

THE TRAIL OF THE INVISIBLE NINNI,

The Trail of Invisible Ninni in Moomin Valley is an interactive attraction that allows children and adults to explore the literary land of the Moomins in an active and adventurous way. Ninni is invisible because she was mistreated for a long time, but under the care of Moominmamma, she gradually becomes visible, strong and brave. Following the Invisible Ninni Trail, visitors can feel as brave as Ninni and discover the most interesting places in Moomin Valley. Along the way, you will meet the lonely Groke in a cold cave, the electric Hatifnats, and you can also visit the Witch’s House.

BUKA

On the Trail of Invisible Ninni in Moominvalley, you can also meet the famous Buka. Who doesn’t know her, and who wasn’t afraid of this mysterious, somewhat scary character in their childhood? Buka appears in Moominworld in specially prepared scenes and installations that add a touch of excitement while allowing children to safely encounter this legendary character from Tove Jansson’s literary world.

HATIFNAT CAVES

On the way, it is also worth visiting the Hatifnat Caves. The Hatifnats, known from Tove Jansson’s books as mysterious, electric creatures, live in dark caves full of light and sounds imitating their characteristic ‘buzzing’. These unusual creatures begin to glow thanks to lightning, which adds a unique, magical atmosphere to a visit to Moominvalley.

THE WITCH’S HOUSE

The Witch’s House stands on a hill surrounded by forest, and its appearance immediately brings to mind Tove Jansson’s illustrations: a crooked chimney, mysterious windows and an old wooden structure. The interior of the house is full of spells, potions and strange objects that show how the Witch lives and experiments. Be careful! Sometimes the Witch casts spells, summoning rain clouds and making old trees whisper.

MOOMINVALLEY PRISON

Moominvalley Prison is the last attraction I will talk about in Moominvalley. Visitors can get a glimpse of Snufkin’s daily life in this amusing ‘detention centre’, learning about his character and discovering Tove Jansson’s literary humour. This place is full of interesting details that add variety to the walk and introduce interactive fun for children. You can even get yourself ‘locked up’ here to feel like the characters in the Moomin books.

TRAIL TO THE BEACH

On a hot day, you can cool off for a while in the cold coastal waters. Just take a wristband from the lady in the hut at one of the exits and then calmly return to the park to continue enjoying the fun.

NAANTALI IS NOT JUST THE MOOMIN VALLEY

BORDERS OF NAANTALI

Naantali, as you can see, is not just a town near Turku. Most of its territory consists of more or less developed islands. The largest is Luonnonmaa. The town also includes about 1,000 smaller islands, including picturesque islets and rocks that form part of the sea archipelago:

  • Kailo, home to the Moominworld theme park.
  • Särkkä – a rocky, wooded island with an area of approximately 16 hectares, partially protected as a nature reserve
  • Otava – a larger island located west of Naantali, with an area of approximately 105 km²

The territory of Naantali also includes the former island municipalities of Velkua and Livonsaari, which were incorporated into the city in 2009 and 2011, respectively. These areas consist of many inhabited islands with regular ferry connections and good infrastructure.

GUIDE TO NAANTALI

As I mentioned above, Moomin Valley is not the only reason to visit this area. Naantali is a picturesque old town with narrow cobbled streets and colourful wooden houses, inviting you to take a leisurely stroll. On summer days, the town becomes the real capital of Finnish holidays. It is home to the summer residence of the President of Finland, and numerous festivals and events attract tourists from all over the country and abroad.

KYRKOPARKEN PARK

A bus from the car park takes us to the green area in the western part of Naantali. In summer, the park is filled with flowers, and benches in the shade of trees offer relaxation with a view of Naantali harbour. During the summer season, outdoor events and concerts are held here, making the park not only a place of relaxation but also an important part of cultural life in Naantali. The buildings at Kyrkoparken are a picturesque combination of historic buildings and charming, colourful houses characteristic of the old town of Naantali. The wooden facades and the proximity of the medieval church create a unique atmosphere. A walk along the park allows you to admire the architecture, which has retained its traditional Finnish character.

NAANTALI CHURCH

The church tower towers over the park. This is Naantalin kirkko, one of the most important monuments in Naantali and the largest medieval church in south-western Finland. The temple was built in the 15th century as part of a monastery. The interior of the church impresses with its simplicity and tranquillity, and in summer it hosts classical music concerts and cultural events.

MARINA

There is a large marina on the southern coast of the city. It is the bustling heart of the city and one of the most beautiful places to walk. Located right next to the old town of Naantali, it attracts sailors, tourists and locals alike, offering a view of dozens of yachts and boats moored in the harbour. Along the waterfront, there are cafés, restaurants and ice cream parlours that create a holiday atmosphere. The marina is also the starting point for cruises around the nearby islands of the Turku Archipelago. In summer, it is one of the most photogenic places in Naantali, ideal for an evening stroll at sunset.

OBSERVATION TOWER

The Näkötorni tower is located at the very end of the marina, making it a great vantage point. It is situated on a hill offering a panoramic view of Naantali, the harbour, the Turku Archipelago and the nearby Moomin Valley. The tower’s structure is unique as it is one of three preserved structures of the former municipal spa. The architecture resembles a gazebo rather than a tower, which makes it stand out from other buildings. The structure was erected above a water reservoir in 1863 on the Kalevanniemi cape, which further emphasises its historical significance.

LUONNONMAA ISLAND AND KULTURANTA CASTLE

Luonnonmaa Island, which is clearly visible from Naantali, is famous for its picturesque landscapes, pine forests, coastal cliffs and peaceful bays, attracting tourists all year round. The island can be reached by car via a bridge connecting it to Naantali, making it easily accessible to everyone. Many places on Luonnonmaa offer beautiful views of the Turku Archipelago, which further encourages walking and photography.

The island is home to Kultaranta Castle, which was built in 1916 as the private residence of Alfred Kordelin, a Finnish industrialist and philanthropist, and in 1922 the estate became the summer residence of the President of Finland. The castle is surrounded by a vast park and famous rose gardens with over 3,000 rose bushes, which is why part of the gardens is open to tourists in the summer, and their symmetrical alleys and floral compositions are one of the biggest attractions in Naantali. Kultaranta combines the elegance of a stone castle with the beauty of Finnish nature, which is why it is both a symbol of the city and an important part of Finnish history. Unfortunately, we did not make it to the castle because the gardens were closed at the time, but the surroundings were still very impressive.

WHAT ELSE IS WORTH SEEING IN THE NAANTALI AREA?

Our destination in Naantali was Moomin Valley, so we didn’t go anywhere outside the town centre. If you ever stay here longer, be sure to visit:

  • Vänö – a small island with a lighthouse, ideal for short walking or cycling trips.
  • Luonnonsuojelualueet (nature reserves) – smaller islands with protected areas where you can observe birds and local fauna.
